UFC 331 returns to Los Angeles on Saturday, September 19, 2026, with flyweight champion Joshua Van defending his 125-pound title against former champion Alexandre Pantoja in a rematch at Crypto.com Arena. The co-main event pairs lightweight contenders Arman Tsarukyan and Mauricio Ruffy in a five-round bout as the promotion’s next numbered card after UFC 330 in Philadelphia.

Interest in the September card intensified during UFC 330 fight week after a heated August 14 launch press conference in Philadelphia, where Van and Pantoja traded insults and UFC CEO Dana White had to physically restrain Pantoja when the Brazilian stood and moved toward the champion.

Los Angeles last hosted a numbered UFC pay-per-view at UFC 232 in 2018. UFC 331 marks the promotion’s return to the Crypto.com Arena — formerly Staples Center — with a flyweight title rematch carrying unresolved business from their first meeting.

Main event: Van vs. Pantoja 2

FighterRecordNotes
Joshua Van (c)17-2Won title at UFC 323; defended vs. Tatsuro Taira at UFC 328
Alexandre Pantoja30-6Former two-time flyweight champion; seeking redemption

The pair first fought in December 2025 at UFC 323 in Las Vegas. Van captured the belt via first-round TKO at 0:26 after Pantoja dislocated his left elbow while bracing a fall following a blocked head kick — a finish AP News described as a “quirky” but official result that left both camps wanting a fuller test.

Van has since defended the title once, stopping Tatsuro Taira by fifth-round TKO at UFC 328 in May 2026 in a fight widely regarded as a title-fight candidate for the year. The 24-year-old from Myanmar enters on a seven-fight UFC win streak and has repeatedly said he wants the Pantoja rematch to remove any asterisk from his championship run.

Pantoja, 36, held the flyweight belt across multiple reigns and was widely considered the division’s benchmark before the injury-shortened loss. He has healed from the elbow issue and framed UFC 331 as a chance to reclaim the belt on his own terms.

Philadelphia press conference clash

At Friday’s UFC 331 launch event in Philadelphia — held alongside UFC 330 ceremonial weigh-ins — the rematch’s personal stakes spilled into public view:

  • Pantoja spoke at length about his history in the division; Van interrupted and told him to focus on September 19.
  • Pantoja responded: “Hey kid, when someone talks, you shut your fcking mouth. You understand that?”*
  • When Van asked “What you gonna do about it?”, Pantoja stood and walked toward the champion before security and Dana White intervened.
  • Van mocked Pantoja to sit down; Pantoja replied: “September 19, you’re gonna be locked in the octagon with me.”
  • The pair’s faceoff afterward remained tense, with White again keeping them apart as Van held his championship belt forward.

White later promoted the main event on social media with a Van-Pantoja clip, underscoring the promotional value of a rivalry that had been building since the December stoppage.

Co-main: Tsarukyan vs. Ruffy

FighterRecordNotes
Arman Tsarukyan23-3No. 2 lightweight; five-fight win streak
Mauricio Ruffy14-2No. 7 lightweight; 5-1 in UFC with four KOs

ESPN reported that Tsarukyan, widely viewed as the division’s most deserving title challenger, has not fought since a second-round submission of Dan Hooker in November 2025. He was scheduled to challenge then-champion Islam Makhachev in January 2025 but withdrew the week of the bout due to back spasms.

Ruffy has emerged as one of the lightweight division’s most dangerous knockout artists. The Brazilian is 5-1 in the UFC with four finishes by knockout, making the five-round co-main a stylistic clash between Tsarukyan’s grappling-heavy approach and Ruffy’s power striking.

A planned Charles Oliveira matchup for Tsarukyan did not materialize for this card; Oliveira’s absence was linked in media reports to the death of teammate Allan Nascimento, though White did not address the situation in detail at the Philadelphia press conference.

What’s at stake

For Van, a decisive win would validate a title reign that began under unusual circumstances and cement his place atop a division long ruled by Pantoja and Brandon Moreno. A competitive loss would reopen debate about whether the UFC 323 finish reflected Van’s true level or a freak injury.

For Pantoja, UFC 331 is a career-defining opportunity to avenge the shortest title loss of his championship tenure and prove he remains the division’s standard-bearer at 125 pounds.

Tsarukyan and Ruffy, meanwhile, are effectively fighting for pole position in a lightweight division reshaped by Islam Makhachev’s move to welterweight and ongoing contention at the top of the weight class. A dominant Tsarukyan performance could force the promotion’s hand on a future title shot; a Ruffy upset would instantly elevate a rising Brazilian finisher into elite contention.

Discussion

1. Van’s first title win ended in 26 seconds because of an injury — not a sustained beating. Does a full 25-minute fight change how you view either fighter, regardless of who wins?

Pantoja supporters argue the rematch is the “real” championship fight; Van backers point to his dominant Taira defense as proof the belt belongs with the younger champion.

2. Tsarukyan has been the consensus No. 1 lightweight contender for years without a title shot. Does a five-round win over Ruffy finally clear his path — or does the division need him to wait for other results?

Share whether you think the flyweight rematch or the lightweight co-main is the more compelling storyline heading into September 19.
