UFC 330 Preview & Schedule: Khabib Protégé Makhachev Defends Welterweight Title Against Garry in Philadelphia
Khabib protégé Makhachev on the UFC schedule Aug. 15 in Philadelphia: welterweight title vs. Garry at UFC 330; co-main Dern vs. Robertson.
On the UFC August schedule, UFC 330 comes to Philadelphia on Saturday, August 15, 2026, with a championship doubleheader at the Xfinity Mobile Arena headlined by welterweight champion Islam Makhachev, a Khabib Nurmagomedov protégé, defending his 170-pound title against Ian Machado Garry. In the co-main event, strawweight champion Mackenzie Dern makes her first title defense against Gillian Robertson — the promotion’s first numbered card in the city since UFC 133 in 2011.
Makhachev enters as the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC and a two-division champion after winning the welterweight belt at UFC 322 in November 2025. A victory over Garry would give him a 17th consecutive UFC win, surpassing Anderson Silva’s long-standing record of 16.

Philadelphia is hosting its fourth UFC event and its first pay-per-view-numbered card in 15 years. The promotion last ran a numbered show in the city at UFC 133; its most recent visit was UFC on ESPN: Barboza vs. Gaethje in March 2019.
Main event: Makhachev vs. Garry
| Fighter | Record | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Islam Makhachev (c) | 28-1 | Former lightweight champion; won welterweight title on first attempt vs. Jack Della Maddalena |
| Ian Machado Garry | 17-1 | No. 1 welterweight contender; born in Ireland, trains in Brazil |
Makhachev has not lost since UFC 192 in 2015. After capturing the lightweight title in 2022 and making four defenses, he moved up and stopped Della Maddalena to unify the welterweight picture. He now shares a milestone with Silva: both won a championship bout at a Philadelphia UFC show — Silva at UFC 101 in 2009, Makhachev chasing history at UFC 330.
At Thursday’s news conference, Makhachev pushed back on the idea that Garry represents his toughest test.
“No, it’s not going to be my biggest challenge,” Makhachev said, per AP News. “He’s just good, you know? I give him respect. He has good skills. But everybody knows my game.”
Garry’s only loss came by decision in 2024; two straight wins since then earned him the title shot. The Irish striker carries roughly four inches of height and reach over Makhachev and has built a reputation for decision victories against varied styles — but he is not regarded as an elite wrestler on Makhachev’s level.
“He acts like he’s a bad boy,” Makhachev said. “We will make him humble. We will make him a good guy.”
Garry framed the bout as a chance to prove himself against a fighter already discussed in GOAT conversations.
“For me to go out there against him, who many consider to be a generational talent … for me to go out there and have that as the challenge that I have to go out there and beat to prove I’m not only the champion of the world, but I really truly am the best on the planet, that’s what I want,” Garry said.
Michael Morales is scheduled to weigh in as a backup and potential replacement for the main event, per UFC announcements in June.
Co-main: Dern vs. Robertson
| Fighter | Record | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mackenzie Dern (c) | 16-5 | Won vacant strawweight title at UFC 321; first defense |
| Gillian Robertson | 17-8 | UFC women’s submission wins record; five-fight win streak |
Dern captured the 115-pound belt in her previous outing and said fight week felt different with gold around her shoulder.
“It’s definitely a little bit different doing the faceoffs with the belt in my hand,” Dern said, per AP News. “I’m like, how do I shake her hand? Just getting used to having the belt over my shoulder most of the week during fight week.”
Robertson holds the record for most UFC submission wins by a woman and is tied with Amanda Nunes for the most overall finishes on the women’s side with 10. She has won five straight since returning to strawweight in 2024, making her a grappling-heavy threat to Dern’s jiu-jitsu pedigree.
Full card and late changes
The card underwent several reshuffles in the weeks before fight night:

| Geoff Neal vs. Chidi Njokuani | Neal withdrew; Joel Álvarez stepped in against Njokuani |

| Bout | Weight class |

By the time the main card window opened, several early and preliminary bouts had already reached the scorecards — including Neil Magny’s second-round stoppage of Ramiz Brahimaj, Jeremiah Wells’ third-round submission of Myktybek Orolbai, and Tresean Gore’s unanimous decision over Vicente Luque.
Philadelphia’s fight history and local ties
Garry initially questioned whether Philadelphia was the right stage for a title fight of this magnitude, preferring a market like Las Vegas. He said he came around after studying the city’s boxing heritage — from Joe Frazier to the Rocky statue — and declared Philadelphia would become the place where he wins a world title.
One undercard bout carries a Pennsylvania angle: Dustin Stoltzfus, from Lancaster County Amish country, faces Mansur Abdul-Malik in a middleweight bout on the main card.
“I love this area,” Stoltzfus said, per AP News. “Less Philadelphia. I’m more of a country bumpkin from Lancaster.”
Edson Barboza, who defeated Justin Gaethje at the 2019 Philadelphia ESPN card, returns on this bill against Esteban Ribovics.
What’s at stake
Beyond the two belts on the line, Makhachev’s streak is the headline historical subplot. A win would place him alone atop the UFC’s consecutive-victory list and reinforce his case as the sport’s most dominant active champion across two divisions.
For Garry, a 28-year-old contender with a polished striking base, Philadelphia represents the opportunity to halt that run and claim undisputed welterweight status against the fighter widely considered the division’s benchmark.
Dern and Robertson, meanwhile, could reshape the strawweight hierarchy: a Dern win solidifies her grappling-first championship reign, while a Robertson victory would bring the submission specialist’s streak to a title that has changed hands frequently in recent years.
Discussion
1. Makhachev is a heavy favorite, but Garry’s reach and decision-heavy style pose a different puzzle than recent challengers. Does Garry’s path to victory require a full 25 minutes on the feet — or can he survive enough wrestling to steal rounds late?
2. Robertson’s submission volume against Dern’s own jiu-jitsu credentials makes the co-main a stylistic mirror. In a division where finishes are rare, does the grappler or the striker-grappler hybrid hold the edge over five rounds?
Share where you see the welterweight division heading if Garry pulls the upset — and whether Makhachev’s streak deserves GOAT-level recognition even before Saturday’s result.
