RER A Voie Ferrée Renewal Ends Aug. 23 as Paris Commuter Line Prepares to Reopen

On Sunday, August 23, 2026, the final day of a two-week shutdown on the RER A between Vincennes and Noisy-le-Grand–Mont d’Est, Paris-area commuters marked the end of a major voie ferrée renewal — the replacement of rails, switches and ballast on one of Europe’s busiest commuter lines. RATP, the operator, said regular train service on the closed eastern-branch segment is scheduled to resume on Monday, August 24.

The closure, which began Saturday, August 8, halted all RER A trains on the Marne-la-Vallée branch between Vincennes (Val-de-Marne) and Noisy-le-Grand–Mont d’Est (Seine-Saint-Denis). Stations at Val-de-Fontenay, Neuilly-Plaisance, Bry-sur-Marne, and Noisy-le-Grand–Mont d’Est were not served during the works.

What work was completed

The August shutdown was the first major phase of a 15-year program to modernize roughly 80 km of track and 47 switches on the RER A’s eastern branches. Crews focused this summer on a roughly 2 km stretch at Val-de-Fontenay, where excavators removed old rails, renewed the ballast (the crushed-stone bed beneath the tracks), and prepared to lay new sleepers and rails.

Project manager Frédéric Legard told French media that the infrastructure being replaced dated back about half a century. RATP cycles through full voie ferrée renewal on the line roughly every 40 to 50 years — the western branch was modernized from 1993 to 1998, the central section from 2015 to 2021, and the eastern branch work is now expected to run into the early 2040s.

At Val-de-Fontenay, crews also used the closure window to install an underground pedestrian passage beneath the tracks — a separate modernization project tied to the same construction site.

Why the RER A needs renewal

The RER A carries more than one million passengers per day across seven departments, 41 municipalities, and 46 stations. That intensity wears down rails, ties, and ballast faster than on lighter lines, and worn track raises the risk of delays and equipment failures.

Legard said the operator plans to close short sections each summer rather than attempt a single multi-year blackout. In 2027, work is expected to continue toward Boissy-Saint-Léger, with the eastern terminus temporarily shifted to La Varenne–Chennevières and service suspended at Sucy–Bonneuil and Boissy-Saint-Léger. Additional evening closures are planned for October 16–29, 2026, between La Varenne–Chennevières and Boissy-Saint-Léger.

Replacement buses and alternate routes

Throughout the shutdown, RATP ran three replacement bus shuttles:

Estimated bus times were far longer than the train: the full omnibus run was advertised at about 50 minutes, and many riders told reporters their commutes grew by 45 minutes or more.

RATP also directed travelers to connecting bus lines (including routes 113, 114, 118, 120, 124, 206, 210, 306, and 520) and to the RER E as a rail alternative where practical. An online journey planner was updated for the disruption period.

Broader disruption on the line

The Vincennes–Noisy closure coincided with other RER A works. Nation station remained closed through August 30, 2026, with trains passing through but not stopping — adding another complication for riders connecting toward central Paris.

The timing also affected Disneyland Paris visitors, who often rely on the RER A toward Marne-la-Vallée–Chessy. RATP and local tourism sites published alternate routing guidance during August.

What commuters can expect Monday

RATP said normal service should return on the Vincennes–Noisy-le-Grand segment from the first trains on August 24. Riders should still check the RER A website and app before traveling, as post-construction testing or residual adjustments can cause short-notice changes on reopening day.

For residents along the eastern branch, the August 23 milestone closes one disruption window but not the long renovation story. Summer track renewals are expected to continue annually for about 15 years, with each season bringing new partial closures as the voie ferrée is rebuilt section by section.
