Paysandu hosted Confiança on Monday, August 10, 2026, in Brasileirão Série C Round 16 at the Estádio da Curuzu (Leônidas Sodré de Castro) in Belém, with kickoff at 20:00 Brasília time (23:00 UTC). The fixture was broadcast live on SportyNet, pitting a Papão side fighting to re-enter the G-8 promotion bracket against the last-placed Dragão, the only club in the division still without an away win.

With only four rounds remaining after this matchday, both clubs carried survival-level stakes: Paysandu needed points to stay in the fight for the quadrangular de acesso to Série B, while Confiança sought its first road victory to climb off the bottom of the table.

Standings and what was at stake

Entering Round 16, Paysandu and Confiança sat at opposite ends of a table where every point shapes promotion and relegation math in the final stretch of the first phase.

Paysandu: back into the G-8

The Papão had dropped out of the top-eight cutoff that defines the quadrangular de acesso — the four-team playoff bracket that decides which club advances toward Série B. Despite the setback, manager Júnior Rocha stressed that Paysandu still controlled its own path: wins in the remaining fixtures could restore a place among the promotion contenders.

Home form offered hope. At the Curuzu, Paysandu had collected four wins, two draws, and two losses across eight home matches — a 58.3% points rate, far stronger than their away record. The club also promoted a Father’s Day ticket initiative to draw a large crowd for a decisive Monday night.

Gabriel Mesquita returned to the starting goalkeeper role after completing concussion protocol, replacing Marcão. In attack, Juninho was ruled out with a left-knee sprain, opening a spot for Ítalo. Kleiton Pego, Thayllon, Pablo Alcântara, and Lucas Cardoso competed for wide roles, while newly signed Lucas Rodrigues was listed among substitutes for the first time.

Confiança: lanterna with no away wins

Ricardo Resende, coaching on an interim basis after Thiago Gomes left, faced a club in free fall. The Dragão drew 1-1 with Itabaiana in Round 15 but still slipped to last place as rivals picked up points elsewhere.

Away from Aracaju, Confiança’s numbers were dire: one point from seven road trips, a 4.8% away points rate, and the competition’s weakest attack with only nine goals scored in 15 matches. Luiz Thiago, signed from América-RN, was eligible and could debut up front.

Yet Resende had two weeks of training to reorganize a side that had not won in four rounds. Concentration at kickoff became a priority after Confiança conceded in the first minute against Itabaiana before equalizing.

Probable lineups

Official starting elevens were confirmed closer to kickoff. Pre-match reports projected the following:

Paysandu (Júnior Rocha)

Probable XI: Gabriel Mesquita; Edilson, Pedro Carrerette, Bruno Bispo, Facundo Bonifazi (or Taboca); Pedro Henrique, Caio Mello, Marcinho; Thayllon (or Pablo Alcântara), Lucas Cardoso (or Kleiton Pego), Ítalo.

Round 16 context in Série C

Round 16 arrived with the first phase entering its closing stretch. After this matchday, only four rounds remained before the table splits promotion playoff qualifiers from relegated clubs.

For Paysandu, a home win against the bottom team was the minimum requirement to re-enter the G-8 and keep Série B dreams alive. For Confiança, any positive result on the road — especially a first away victory — could ignite a late escape from the relegation places.

The fixture had originally been scheduled for July 10 but was postponed; both clubs carried the accumulated pressure of that delay into a Monday night at the Curuzu.

Discussion

Série C’s final weeks turn ordinary fixtures into season-defining nights — especially when one club is chasing the G-8 and the other is the only team in the division still winless away from home.

1. Paysandu fell out of the G-8 despite still sitting sixth. Is beating the last-placed team at home a must-win — or could Confiança’s desperation on the road make this tighter than the table suggests?

2. Confiança have one point from seven away games and the weakest attack in the division. Can Ricardo Resende’s two weeks of preparation produce the Dragão’s first road win — or does Paysandu’s home record at the Curuzu make that unrealistic?

3. With only four rounds left after Round 16, how much does a single postponed fixture (originally set for July 10) change the psychology of both squads entering the closing stretch?
