On Wednesday, August 19, 2026, Minnesota Lynx rookie Olivia Miles left a 77–66 road win over the Golden State Valkyries with a left ankle injury in the fourth quarter at Chase Center in San Francisco. Miles had already poured in 20 points, seven assists, and five rebounds on 8-of-10 shooting — including a viral step-back three-pointer that moved her to fourth on the WNBA’s all-time rookie scoring list — before she rolled her ankle and did not return.

Minnesota led 41–26 at halftime after Golden State opened 5-of-27 from the field and 2-of-14 from three in the first half. The Lynx built a lead as large as 22 points before the Valkyries trimmed the margin to seven early in the fourth quarter.

How Olivia Miles dominated — then exited

The No. 2 overall pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft controlled the game’s tempo from the opening tip. After shooting 1-for-10 in her previous meeting against Golden State, Miles flipped the script with efficient shot-making and playmaking throughout 34 minutes before the injury.

Step-back three and rookie scoring milestone

Midway through the contest, Miles created separation against Veronica Burton with a sharp sidestep and buried a step-back three-pointer that pushed her past A’ja Wilson for fourth place on the league’s all-time rookie scoring list. She sits eight points behind Paige Bueckers for third on that chart.

The clip spread quickly across social platforms — another highlight in a debut season where Miles has averaged roughly 19.9 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.6 rebounds through 34 games.

The ankle injury

With 5:06 remaining in the fourth quarter, Miles scored on a jumper that gave Minnesota a 63–52 lead. On the Lynx’s next possession, she inadvertently stepped on teammate Napheesa Collier’s foot while playing defense, rolled her left ankle, and went down at the baseline.

Miles held her left leg, limped to the locker room under her own power, and later returned to the bench area standing on the sideline. She did not check back in. With 4:37 left, she was officially out of the game.

No official timetable for her return was announced as of reporting on August 20.

Lynx held on without their rookie spark

Kayla McBride matched Miles with 20 points and delivered the late baskets Minnesota needed when Golden State threatened a comeback. McBride scored 10 of the Lynx’s 23 fourth-quarter points, including a late three-pointer at Chase Center — home of the NBA’s Stephen Curry — that she punctuated with Curry’s signature “night night” gesture.

McBride also assisted on a highlight wraparound behind-the-back pass from Miles earlier in the game, setting up McBride’s franchise-record 106th three-pointer of the season.

Napheesa Collier added 18 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Courtney Williams chipped in nine points and seven assists as Minnesota won its fifth straight game and 15th in 16 — improving to 11–1 on the road against Western Conference opponents this season.

Valkyries’ offense stalled

Golden State’s six-game winning streak ended with just its second loss in 17 games. The Valkyries had already clinched a playoff berth with a 78–70 win over Dallas on Monday, but they could not solve Minnesota’s defense on either end.

The hosts shot 32.5% overall and 18.9% on 37 three-point attempts — compared with seven makes on 19 tries for Minnesota. Leading scorer Gabby Williams was held to 10 points on 4-of-15 shooting, including 1-of-7 from deep in the first half.

Kaila Charles also left in the fourth quarter after taking a hit to the eye.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced Tuesday that Chase Center and the Valkyries will host the 2027 All-Star Game — context for the sellout crowd that watched Minnesota extend its mastery of the second-year franchise.

Playoff picture and what’s next

The Lynx remain the league’s top team and tightened their grip on the No. 1 seed with a four-game cushion over Golden State. Minnesota swept the Valkyries in the 2025 playoff first round, and Wednesday’s result underscored how difficult the expansion club has found this rivalry.

The clubs meet again Monday in Minneapolis, where Minnesota will seek a 10th consecutive all-time win in the series.

Miles’s ankle status will loom over that rematch and the Lynx’s push toward home-court advantage through the postseason.

Discussion

Wednesday night delivered another Olivia Miles highlight reel — and a late injury scare for the WNBA’s best team.

1. Miles left under her own power and returned to the bench, but did not play again. How worried should Lynx fans be about a playoff run that may hinge on her health?

2. Passing A’ja Wilson on the all-time rookie scoring list puts Miles in rare company with Paige Bueckers and Caitlin Clark. Is she already the best pure facilitator among this generation’s top rookies, or does the three-point record from June still define her ceiling?

3. Golden State has never beaten Minnesota in seven meetings. Can the Valkyries close the gap in Monday’s rematch if Miles sits out — or does this loss confirm the Lynx are still a tier above?

Where do you rank Minnesota and Golden State in the West, and does Miles’s injury change your playoff outlook?
