McDonald's Japan Sets M and L Fries at 250 Yen in Tokuninarudo Summer Deal
McDonald's Japan cuts medium and large Mac Fries to 250 yen Aug. 17–28. Masato Sakai and Yuuna Nagao star in a new Tokuninarudo TV spot from Aug. 14.
On August 10, 2026, McDonald’s Japan announced a 12-day Tokuninarudo promotion that will cut medium and large Mac Fries to a flat 250 yen (tax included) at restaurants nationwide from August 17 through August 28. A new television commercial starring actor Masato Sakai as Mr. Tokuninarudo and child actress Yuuna Nagao is scheduled to begin airing on August 14.
Editor’s note: This article draws on McDonald’s Japan’s August 10, 2026 press release and coverage in Japanese outlets including ORICON NEWS and Livedoor News. Prices and availability may vary by store, region, and delivery channel.
What is Tokuninarudo?
Tokuninarudo (literally 「becoming a bargain」) is McDonald’s Japan’s long-running value campaign that rotates discounted menu items throughout the year. Sakai has portrayed the campaign mascot Mr. Tokuninarudo — a red-suited pitchman — in a string of spots built around the tagline that familiar favorites keep getting cheaper.
The August fries offer lands just after the Obon holiday week, when many families return from travel and settle back into routines. McDonald’s is positioning the deal as a late-summer treat for outings, leisure trips, and meals at home.
Fries deal: dates, prices, and rules
| Item | Regular price (approx.) | Promo price | Sale window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mac Fries — Medium | from 350 yen | 250 yen | Aug. 17 (Mon) – Aug. 28 (Fri), 2026 |
| Mac Fries — Large | from 400 yen | 250 yen | Same 12-day period |
Key details from the company:
- Savings: Up to 150 yen off the usual price, depending on size and location.
- Hours: From 10:30 a.m. until closing (at 24-hour locations, until 4:59 a.m. the next day).
- Standalone purchase: The 250-yen price applies when fries are bought on their own, not only as part of a set meal.
- Coverage: Available at McDonald’s restaurants across Japan, excluding some locations.
- Delivery caveat: Stores in certain areas or on delivery platforms may not participate and may charge regular prices instead.
Mac Fries are cut from whole potatoes, fried golden-brown on the outside with a fluffy interior — one of the chain’s best-known side items in Japan. McDonald’s also suggests pairing them with the limited Shaka Shaka Potato nori-salt seasoning (from about 50 yen), on sale since July 22.
New TV commercial: “FRY L or go with M?”
The 30-second spot 「FRY Lか?あえてのMか?」 (“Large fries — or deliberately medium?”) debuts August 14 on national television (with some regional exceptions).
| Element | Detail |
|---|---|
| Cast | Masato Sakai (Mr. Tokuninarudo) and Yuuna Nagao — first time co-starring in a McDonald’s Japan ad |
| Premise | Nagao asks why anyone would order a medium when medium and large cost the same 250 yen |
| Payoff | Sakai’s character fumbles the answer, falling back on 「You’ll understand when you’re grown up!」 while promoting the equal pricing |
| Setting | A theme-park-style 「Tokuninarudo Land」 with potato-shaped rides, including the SUPER POTATO FLY attraction |
Behind-the-scenes notes released with the ad describe Sakai escorting Nagao through the set, the pair bonding over sharing Libra birthdays one day apart (October 14 and 15), and Nagao spotting a single burned-out light bulb on a ride — a detail staff quickly fixed.
Sakai told interviewers that Tokuninarudo spots had mostly been solo monologues until now, and that having a co-star made the shoot feel fresh. Nagao, making her McDonald’s commercial debut at age nine, said she has loved fries since her first visit to the chain.
X lottery and other summer offers
McDonald’s Japan is running a reply-to-win campaign on its official X account (@McDonaldsJapan):
| Date | Hashtag window (7:00–23:59 JST) |
|---|---|
| Aug. 16 (Sun) | #トクニナルドでポテトML250円 |
| Aug. 17 (Mon) | #ポテトML250円で超おトクな夏 |
Followers who reply to the designated posts with the day’s hashtag can enter a draw for 1,000-yen Mac Cards. 100 winners will be chosen across the two days.
The fries announcement arrived amid a busy stretch for the brand in Japan:
- Pokémon Happy Meal toys remain part of the summer lineup.
- A separate 490-yen chicken nuggets promotion carried a same-day (August 10) deadline, stacking several offers in the same news cycle.
McDonald’s Japan marks its 55th anniversary in 2026. President and CEO Thomas Ko said the company will continue pairing convenience with periodic value deals through the year.
How to check before you go
Because pricing and participation differ by store and delivery service, McDonald’s advises checking the official app, mobile order, or McDelivery listing for your location. Campaign terms can change or end without notice; full rules are posted at mcdonalds.co.jp/campaign/tokuninarudo/.
Discussion
When two sizes share one price, the choice says something about how you order fast food.
1. Medium and large Mac Fries will both cost 250 yen for 12 days — which would you pick, and why?
Is it always large when the gap is zero, or do you sometimes prefer a smaller portion, sharing, or fewer leftovers?
2. McDonald’s Japan leans on a familiar TV face and a child co-star to sell a simple price cut. Does celebrity advertising change whether you notice or trust a limited-time food deal?
