Friday, August 14, 2026, brought the full Ligue 2 BKT picture into focus: all nine Round 2 fixtures kicked off in a single Friday multiplex, and by roughly 22:30 local time the table had taken shape. AS Saint-Étienne extended their perfect start with a 3-1 home win over Clermont, FC Nantes sank to the foot of the table after a 2-1 loss at Laval, Stade de Reims squandered a two-goal lead in a 3-3 draw with Dunkerque, and Montpellier claimed a 1-0 win at Nancy.

The night was also marred by injuries — most notably Francis Coquelin, stretchered off after a head clash minutes into his return to Laval — across several grounds.

Editor’s note: This article draws on match reports from L’Équipe, beIN SPORTS, and Foot Mercato, August 14–15, 2026. Scores and scorers reflect final results from the Round 2 multiplex.

Saint-Étienne: second straight win at Geoffroy-Guichard

Saint-Étienne arrived at Geoffroy-Guichard on the back of a 3-0 demolition of Sochaux on opening night and left with another statement performance — their first home win of 2026-27 despite reduced capacity, with the Charles-Paret and Jean-Snella stands closed.

Early alarm came when defender João Ferreira left on a stretcher after a heavy collision, but Ian Cathro’s side controlled the match thereafter. Irvin Cardona, who had scored twice at Sochaux, opened the scoring in the 41st minute. Thierno Ballo doubled the lead shortly after the break (54’), and Danish recruit Jakob Breum — already the breakout star of pre-season — added a third (71’). Ousmane Diop pulled one back for Clermont in the 89th minute, too late to change the outcome.

With six points from two matches, Saint-Étienne sit alone at the top of Ligue 2, having scored six goals while conceding one. They host Grenoble next on Saturday, August 22.

Nantes crisis deepens after Laval loss

For FC Nantes, relegated from Ligue 1 last season, the second tier has offered no relief. After opening with a 0-1 home defeat to Red Star, the Canaris traveled to Stade Francis Le Basser and left with another loss — and provisional last place.

The match turned grim within 14 minutes. Francis Coquelin, the former Arsenal and Villarreal midfielder returning to his boyhood club Laval at age 35, collided head-on with Wilitty Younoussa in midfield. Both players were stretchered off; Coquelin was taken to hospital conscious but with a cheekbone injury, according to local press reports. Younoussa also left the field hurt.

Play resumed, and Trevis Dago gave Laval the lead in the 17th minute. Bahereba Guirassy equalized for Nantes before halftime (44’), but the visitors managed only three shots on target all night. In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Mathis Houdayer struck the winner for Laval (90+5).

Nantes are the only club with two defeats from two rounds and sit 18th on zero points. Manager Michel Der Zakarian faces mounting pressure to find a first win before the table hardens.

Reims throw away 3-1 lead against Dunkerque

At Stade Auguste-Delaune, Reims looked set to bounce back from a goalless Round 1 draw at Clermont. Nicolas Usai’s side led 3-1 after an hour, with Yaya Fofana scoring twice alongside an opener from Adrien Lebeau.

The match flipped in two minutes. Souleymane Keita pulled Dunkerque back to 3-2 in the 72nd minute, and Reims defender Armel Zohouri was sent off for an elbow in the 74th. Playing with ten men, Reims held until the final seconds — then conceded a penalty converted by Thomas Robinet in the 97th minute for 3-3.

Dunkerque, who had beaten Grenoble 4-2 on opening day, took a point that felt like a win. Reims, meanwhile, dropped two points they had fully earned.

Montpellier and the rest of the multiplex

Montpellier HSC, relegated alongside Nantes from Ligue 1, secured their first win of the campaign at Stade Marcel Picot. After a frustrating 0-0 home draw with Dijon in Round 1, Lacine Megnan-Pave set up Yanis Issoufou on a swift counter for the 72nd-minute winner at Nancy.

Other results underlined how competitive the division looks early on:

  • Annecy beat Rodez 2-0 at home despite losing François Lajugie to a knee injury in the 7th minute. Antoine Larose and Moïse Dion scored either side of halftime.
  • Pau won 1-0 at Dijon, a useful away result.
  • Guingamp ended an eight-match winless run dating to March with a 1-0 home victory over Boulogne, Stanislas Kielt scoring the only goal.
  • Grenoble and Metz played out a goalless stalemate with just three shots on target combined — a dull affair on the beIN multiplex.
  • Red Star and Sochaux shared a 0-0 draw at Stade Bauer.

Saint-Étienne’s six-point haul after two rounds sends an early promotion message. At the other end, Nantes must arrest a slide that already feels existential for a club accustomed to top-flight football.

What’s next

Round 3 spreads across the weekend of August 21–22. Saint-Étienne host Grenoble on Saturday; Nantes welcome Boulogne to La Beaujoire; Reims travel to Pau; and Montpellier face a tricky trip to Dunkerque on Friday, August 21.

Discussion

French second-tier Fridays pack nine games into one television window — and Round 2 delivered goals, controversy, and a injury scare that overshadowed several scorelines.

1. Saint-Étienne have six points and six goals after two rounds. Is Ian Cathro’s side the clear promotion favorite, or is it too early to crown a leader in a Ligue 2 field that includes Metz, Reims, and Montpellier?

Does back-to-back 3-goal performances signal a different level, or simply soft opening fixtures?

2. Nantes are bottom with zero points and have looked short of confidence in both matches. Can a club of their stature recover from two opening defeats, or does Ligue 2’s physicality expose a deeper squad problem after relegation?

What would count as a realistic target for Der Zakarian by winter?

3. Francis Coquelin’s return to Laval lasted five minutes before a head injury ended his night. How should leagues balance the emotional story of a veteran homecoming against the duty of care when two players clash at full speed?

Share where you think Saint-Étienne and Nantes finish the 2026-27 season — and whether Reims will regret Friday’s late collapse.
