France’s Caisse d’Allocations Familiales (CAF) and the agricultural MSA (Mutualité sociale agricole) will transfer the 2026 back-to-school allowance — the allocation de rentrée scolaire (ARS) — on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, to eligible families in mainland France, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and French Guiana. Payments range from €426.87 to €466.02 per child, depending on age. As the date approaches, CAF is reminding parents of 16- to 18-year-olds to complete an online school-attendance declaration in their account before funds are released.

Families can check expected amounts in the Mon Compte CAF app or website from August 12, 2026 in those territories. Actual bank deposits may appear one to three business days after CAF initiates transfers, depending on each bank’s processing schedule.

Editor’s note: This article draws on CAF national guidance, France’s Service Public portal, and reporting from Le Parisien and Ouest-France, July–August 2026. Payment dates and eligibility rules follow official social-security calendars; individual cases may vary.

What is the ARS?

The allocation de rentrée scolaire (ARS) is an annual, means-tested payment for lower-income families with school-age children. It is meant to help cover back-to-school costs — supplies, clothing, canteen fees, and related expenses — ahead of the September 1, 2026 return to class in mainland France and most overseas departments.

For the 2026 school year, eligible children must be born between September 16, 2008 and December 31, 2020 (inclusive), or be enrolled in CP (first grade) even if not yet six. The benefit applies to children in public or private school, apprenticeships, or specialized care facilities. Families who home-school without CNED correspondence courses are generally not eligible; children on CNED distance learning may qualify.

Roughly three million households receive the payment each year, according to French social-security reporting cited in national media.

How much will families receive?

Amounts were revalued on April 1, 2026 — up about 0.8% from 2025 — and are quoted after the social-debt repayment contribution (CRDS):

Child’s age (2026 school year)ARS amount
6 to 10 years€426.87
11 to 14 years€450.41
15 to 18 years€466.02

Each eligible child receives the rate for their age bracket; families with multiple children get one payment per qualifying child.

In Mayotte, amounts follow school level rather than age bands: €429.01 (primary), €452.67 (collège), and €468.36 (lycée). Mayotte and La Réunion received earlier payments on August 4, 2026, aligned with earlier local school start dates.

Who qualifies — and income limits

Eligibility depends on 2024 household income (the standard N-2 reference year for 2026 benefits). France uses categorical net income — wages, property income, and similar categories minus tax charges and statutory allowances.

Resource ceilings for 2026 ARS, set by a December 22, 2025 order, are:

Dependent children2024 income ceiling (must not exceed)
1€28,956
2€35,638
3€42,320
4€49,002

Each additional dependent child adds €6,682 to the ceiling. Households slightly above the limit may still receive a partial differential payment based on income.

Applicants must also have filed a 2024 tax return; automatic processing relies on up-to-date fiscal data.

The Direction de la Sécurité sociale confirmed the mainland and Caribbean schedule on July 16, 2026. CAF and MSA initiate bank transfers on those dates; funds may land in accounts later in the week.

Steps families must take

Most parents of children aged 6 to 15 need no application if the child is already registered with CAF or MSA — payment is automatic when income tests are met.

16- to 18-year-olds: mandatory declaration

Parents of teenagers born between September 16, 2008 and December 31, 2010 must confirm in Mon Compte (CAF website or Caf – Mon Compte app) that the child will remain in school, apprenticeship, or approved training at the start of the 2026 school year. CAF has flagged this step as the most common reason payments are delayed or withheld for otherwise eligible families.

The declaration window opened from mid-July 2026.

Other cases requiring action

  • CP enrollment before age 6: submit a school certificate to CAF or MSA.
  • Not yet a CAF/MSA recipient: file a family-benefits status declaration and income declaration.
  • Disputes: request review through the CAF commission de recours amiable (amicable appeals commission).

College and lycée scholarships (bourses) can be combined with ARS; both are means-tested separately.

What if payment is missing?

If nothing arrives after August 18 (allowing for banking delays), CAF advises checking:

  1. Mes paiements in Mon Compte for file status or holds
  2. Whether the 16–18 declaration was completed
  3. That the 2024 tax return was filed and processed
  4. Income against the published 2024 ceilings

Foreign residents legally receiving French family benefits follow the same rules if registered with CAF or MSA.

Broader context

The ARS is one of several CAF family benefits tied to France’s social-security system. The August disbursement arrives as retailers promote rentrée sales and as households budget for textbooks, uniforms, and transport passes before classes resume September 1.

For many modest-income families, the allowance is not a bonus but a planned line item in the household budget — often timed to major supply purchases in the week after payment.

Discussion

1. Should the 16–18 online declaration be required every year?

CAF says it prevents payments for teens who have left school. Critics argue the extra step burdens busy families and causes preventable delays. Is the safeguard worth the friction?

2. Do the 2024 income ceilings still match the cost of equipping a child for school in 2026?

With inflation in stationery, clothing, and canteen fees, some parents say even the full €466.02 barely covers essentials in larger cities. Others note partial payments near the ceiling may leave households just above help but still struggling.

If your family receives ARS — or just missed eligibility — how did the timing and amount line up with your back-to-school spending this year?
